The left-back sustained the injury in the Blues' 2-1 defeat to Everton at Goodison Park in a challenge with Landon Donovan.
Cole will now be in a race against time to be fit for Barclays Premier League title-chasing Chelsea's last match of the season against Wigan Athletic on 9th May.
A statement on the club's official website read: "Ashley Cole suffered a fracture to his left ankle in last night's game against Everton and is expected to be out of action for approximately three months."
